Our primary goal is to enhance pedestrian safety in District 10's residential areas by addressing critical issues like speeding and reckless driving. We aim to reduce traffic-related risks, create safer walkable communities, and improve overall quality of life for residents. We initiated this when we heard safety issues for pedestrians in Hampton Drive due to speeding.
Key Action: Installation of Speed Humps on Hampton Drive
Through collaboration with the District 10 City Council and the Department of Transportation (DOT), we have secured funding for the installation of four speed humps along Hampton Drive, one of the priority areas for traffic calming in our district. Thanks to the hard work of the Neighborhood Transportation Committee and the support of local residents, we have successfully collected signatures and gained community approval for the installation of four speed humps along Hampton Drive. During fall of 2024, these speed humps were installed on Hampton Drive. They are designed to:
● Reduce vehicle speeds: Speed humps encourage drivers to slow down, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity.
● Enhance pedestrian safety: Slower traffic will create safer conditions for children, seniors, and other residents walking along Hampton Drive.
● Improve community engagement: Working with local residents and city officials, we can ensure that pedestrian safety remains a priority and that the voices of the community are heard in decision-making.
Next Steps for the Working Group:
1. Public Outreach: Advocate for local residents to explain the importance of traffic calming measures and solicit additional feedback or concerns.
2. Expansion: Advocate the need for additional traffic calming measures such as pedestrian crossings, signage, and road improvements, in other high-traffic residential areas in District 10.
By working together with the City Council, DOT, and community members, we can continue to make District 10 a safer, more walkable place for everyone.
